As we move into the 21st Century it's increasingly more important to belong to a professional body and be a qualified member. It is now law in most EC countries for a photographer to be qualified before being called professional allowed to work. You can be sure it will not be very long that the same law will apply here. At the SWPP and incorporating now excitedly the British Professional Photographers Associates as well, we will help you to become qualified. In time you will be able to comply with the law and keep on working. Qualifications are one of the most important benefits of joining; think of the prestige it gives you in the eyes of your clients and the confidence you will inspire. And remember in other EC countries like Italy, Germany, France and Spain they already have to be qualified before they can work as professional photographers. As a photographer working in corporate image, I know my clients would not use a person unless he was a qualified member of a recognised society. The next benefit of course is a magazine, where you can air your views, get your work published and get your name known as well as see what is going on in the business. There will also be many opportunities for work with new promotions from the society, which will be organising these for you in the coming years. A special service is now being offered by Winston Ingram - the Chief Examiner and qualified lecturer in Photography if you need technical, business or legal advise this is only a phone call away and the service is available seven days a week. Winston is qualified to fellowship level and holds four different fellowships: the FBPPA (Medical) FRSA, FISTC and FSWPP. He has four Associate - Degree level qualifications and has teaching and working experience spanning 40 years. Individual tuition is available in all aspects of photographic and laboratory techniques and the preparation for all levels of examination. Contact telephone no: 0181 459 2543.
Over the years many students have qualified from the UK and abroad. This year students have come from Burma, the United States, Indian, Pakistan Russian, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Australia, New Zealand, France, Germany and the Philippines to name but a few. They all qualified and opened successful businesses in their countries.
Two very recent success stories are: member John Young (ASWPP) - a former mining engineer and industrial chemist, took up photography a year ago and is now taking professional portraits and model portfolios and has just returned from a trip to the USA and Canada with over 200 wonderful pictures (landscapes) which are to be sold and published next year. We will be printing some in a future magazine. Member Ian Maud also an Associate, was first in optometry, then a drummer with the famous group - Joe Brown and the Brothers. He then became a chauffeur for the president of a Japanese bank. He is now the president and bank's photographer and has had much success with portraits, weddings and specialist food photography as well as still life. He is going on to take his SWPP Associate qualification in Wedding and Portrait next year.
Other members have become successful as medical photographers in hospital and for the police and two members have made it into sport, becoming photographers to football clubs: Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspurs. A third member Dilip Banagee, is official war photographer for the British Government attached to the United Nations and has made many successful trips to Bosnia, Pristine and other war torn spots around the world. All these members qualified after a course of individual tuition with Winston Ingram. In the case of Dilip Bannergee, the press pass of the association was the first step to getting his official UN and Government press passes.
