The lessons learnt?
Not all customers are my customers and I can’t be afraid to tell them so. It wasn’t that I should have done what I believed they were after. It was that I should have said I wasn’t the photographer for them. The work they eventually had done was not work that I would want associated with my brand.
Is it getting harder or easier to make a decent living?
This one is hard to answer. In some ways its getting easier. Some clients are seeing that they need to pay for quality because there is some very poor work out there. I am also finding people aren’t as set on digital files anymore because they recognise that they tend to sit in drawers, never printed and they want work on display now. However with more and more photographers out there its getting harder to get work seen and noticed. And in many cases people are beginning to feel like they can take their own photos which they find good enough. This most certainly has affected the school photography market.
How do you stay ahead of the game?
I’m not sure that I am.
How do organisations such as The Societies of Photographers help?
The Societies brings people together. I have built up a rather large network of great friends from around the world who are there for me for both the good times and the hard times. I can have a laugh with them while at the same time I know I can call upon them when I need help. I will be forever grateful for the friendships I have made through the Societies.
Why is The Societies of Photographers Convention such a big deal for photographers?
(See above - this is where I made most of my most valuable friendships) And it is a great place to learn and be inspired and to have a sort of annual kick off meeting to start the year right.
Is it primarily about the chance to learn from the experiences of imaging icons?
I think I’ve found that I have learned the most useful information from just regular photographers. I don’t need them to be imaging icons.
