For the shoot we enlisted the help of make-up artist, Gillian Hoban, who was given a brief of dark, sultry look, smoky eyes and red lips.

The model, Chevonne, brought her own impressive wardrobe of trashy looking clothes...as well as her usual great sense of humour.

We decided to shoot in some old, derelict buildings, and because we were going for a dark, gothic feel, I wanted a deliberately cold feel. I added to this with the use of a blue gel on the background light. I realised right before the shoot that my set of gels for the speed lights were 80 miles away, which was a bit of a spanner in the works. However, my years of watching Blue Peter as a child paid off, and despite having no grown up to help, I managed to create a blue gel with an A4 tesco document wallet, a pair of scissors, double sided tape and an old Stofen diffuser.

I set up the first unit on camera and then allocated zone 1 to the Quantum and soft box, zone 2 to the first background light and zone 3 to the blue light.

First task was to meter for the ambient light in the building. I set the camera to these settings, and then adjusted the Quantum accordingly. I then switched the Quantum off and metered the background light before doing the same with the blue light.
