This is a fundamental question. Our experience teaches that it is probably the most important but even so we set out to demonstrate the effect. We revisited the location from which the wall panorama was shot and made images of the Liver Building using 70, 105, 135, 200 and finally 300mm lens focal lengths (a Nikkor 70-200 plus a Nikkor 300mm f4 Apo lens). The scaling of the original wall artwork was as shown in the table.
The various focal lengths donated different numbers of pixels to the height of the Liver Building from the top of the Liver Birds to ground level as follows:
