The interior of the Ferrari was shot using Auto Exposure, Auto White Balance using a 28mm lens at 1/200 f5.6, ISO 100, Highlight Recovery at 100% and in sRGB. The shadows were just clipped. The highlights are shown via Threshold mode. The clipping on the leather seat was recovered with a half stop adjustment but the gear shifter and bezel were more than four stops clipped and could not be recovered. The Auto White balanc egave the truest representation of the overall colour.

In the Studio - Tungsten Light Aled has been experimenting with tungsten lighting, low shutter speeds and fast lenses for child portraiture. He finds that, once a youngster is engrossed in drawing on his backdrop, they soon ignore the sound of the shutter, compared with the distraction of a flash booming off every few seconds.

The overall balance of the shots was allowed to vary with the Auto White Balance judgement from the camera. When a large area of backdrop was visible this warmed the shot to the tune of 500°K, a preferred result over the rather cooler, corrected white balance.

When the shot was more crowded with people, the white balance was more accurate but perhaps not as pleasing. The 'correct' and preferred white balances are shown. The larger shot, at the table, was shot on Auto White Balance, 1/35 at f 2.8 and ISO200, on a 50mm f1.8 Nikkor. An exposure compensation of +1 stop was needed to take account of the white backdrop.

The split shot shows the preferred and the 'correct' colour balance obtained for the background white. This is repeated in the shot above but the one to the right has a more 'regular' balance because the child fills much more of the frame, removing the influence of the background

The use of such wide apertures demands very accurate focusing and the movement of a young child require the auto focus to track at some speed. Aled found the focus speed a little wanting compared with his Nikon D2x. Outdoors Northern Ferrari Hire had kindly brought a four-wheeled model along and this was combined with our twolegged one for the outdoor sequences.

Conditions were bright and sunny and Aled refrained from using fillin flash to keep the dynamic range as high as possible, a more severe test. This is demonstrated in the interior shot of the car, where the gear shifter and the bezel around it are completely clipped. Overall though, the high range was handled well and the small amount of clipping on the leather of the passenger seat could be tweaked out in the RAW file handler.
