That's it! To see the before and after of the completed effect put your Shadows and your Highlights levels adjustments into a group. To do this select both layers. Select one, hold down shift and click on the other. Now simply hit Command (or Control) and G and Photoshop puts these two layers into a group. Now you can toggle the group on and off to see the before and after.
Using channels as masks for your adjustments is an extremely simple, but effective method of controlling your adjustment. You can use the different channels as masks for any adjustment you make to your images. If you have any questions about this, always feel free to send me an email.
