Marko in The Med - part 3 of 1 2 3 4

Thessaloniki was our shortest stay and the next day we were in Athens for our third seminar. Based in a fabulously modern studio, (Studio Kotsireas), where many of Athens's theatre and media community are photographed we were able to rig up a tether system so that as we took a shot on the Hassleblad it could instantly be shown on screen.

Having such facilities available enabled Marko to explore a variety of studio lighting techniques whilst using the screen to explain how step-by-step, poses and lighting could be evolved. One of the problems that the delegates talked about was the lack of available locations in certain area of the city that were photogenic enough for wedding photography. So in the afternoon Marko used the morning's seminar as a basis for developing narrative ideas that minimised the need for easily beautiful locations.

Using graffiti, steel bridges, group interaction and liberal tongue-in-cheek sense of humour, ideas were developed that made the subject the model not the location. The hapless, but very handsome, model's boyfriend, who arrived early, was even press-ganged into the ongoing shoot.

So to the last leg of the tour, Malta. The Maltese have a joke that when Paul arrives in Malta it immediately pours down. No prizes for guessing what greeted us as we stepped of the plane. Fortunately we were immediately greeted by Charles Calleja the President of the MIPP who kindly drove us to our hotel and seminar location. During this journey we were treated to a display of Maltese driving skills that really had to be seen to be believed. Please can I make it clear that Charles was a model of responsibility, grace and driving professionalism. Can I also make it clear that Marko is half Italian and his driving can be described on occasion as 'European'.

However, even he was a little taken aback by the apparent belief that the solid white lines at road junctions are discretionary. Oh how we smiled as we passed four crashes caused by the recent rain. Still we arrived in one piece and with a foretaste of things to come everything was quickly organised for the following day's seminar.

The next day the sight of a cold, wet and blustery seascape outside the hotel quickly dispelled any homesickness that we may have felt. Thus confined to the hotel we changed the format of the day to incorporate more interior shots and a number of images where the model was happy to pose discreetly in lingerie. There were no complaints.
