"A picture, at first glance, might look perfectly good and saleable, and it could even be that the client themselves are happy with everything," says Gordon. "However, if I see something wrong with it I'll ask the photographer to look again and to tell me what they can see that isn't right. Sometimes it takes a while for the penny to drop, but then they'll notice that the hands might be in the wrong place, or that there's something in the background that's jarring. I've even had examples where there appears to be a tree or a chimney growing out of someone's head! Once it's pointed out it all seems so obvious, but it's just so easy to miss. My first workshop will be all about learning to look for the detail upfront, so that you don't dive in and start shooting away without thinking.

"I'm not a fan of wedding reportage work where things tend to be made up on the spot. Rather I would prefer to plan ahead and to work with the couple to ensure that we achieve the best pictures we possibly can on the day, and I take enormous care to make sure that all the elements are exactly right. That means choosing the right background, making sure that the couple's clothes and style suits their surroundings and achieving the right expression. If these three components of a picture come together, then you have the chance to produce something that is really special."
