Matt Fibre and Matt Fibre Duo

Once again the statistics are so similar that the two media may be considered together. The surface is a pleasant cream, just on the warm side of a neutral.

The surface texture is just evident, ie not ultra smooth but not a true 'watercolour' surface. There is no OBA activity, the media is optically dead in UV light with negative fluorescence values in both measurements.

The colour statistics were slightly above average for this class of paper with average errors of under 3.00 ΔE00 on all the patches for the Duo and all but there for the Matt Fibre at 3.03 ΔE00. The HiGAM tones lost about 3% on saturation.

The HiGAM plot shows the blues and magentas as the big losers as might be expected with a slightly creamy paper (but nothing to worry over). The gamut volumes were high without breaking any records (this is currently held by Epson Cold Pressed paper).

Matt Fibre shows typical loss of saturation in our HiGAM patch set. The black arrow shows the colour values moving inwards towards the centre (neutral) point and in this case the magenta blue is most affected.

Monochrome

We tried a combination of ABW Warm/Dark settings to produce a pleasantly warm-toned monochrome. It was a bit down on density of the mid-tone at 56.3%/0.16/6.0 but it was still a good-looking print.

Overall though, a very sound pair of papers although they are too light for limited edition fine art work (which normally require a minimum of 250gsm). Even so, the thinner base might prove useful for fine art albums and the excellent stats mean that you could use Matt Fibre as a proofing medium before committing to a run on an expensive, weighty, premium paper.

SUMMARY

The Photo range are a welcome addition to the printers' choices with little compromise on quality of image on a lighter substrate. For those applications where cost is critical, but the end-user is more unsophisticated, they are ideal. Even so you do not have to make any compromises on the quality of the image, it's right there with the pack!

Next time we will look at the new Hahnemuhle archival boxes and survey some of the other products they provide which can give your fine art printing an extra bit of panache such as holographic tags for limited edition prints and deckle edges.
