Personal work is crucial to Robin's development as a photographer. He's never too busy to get out there and work on another project. 'Personal work shows that I'm an all-round photographer to potential clients, not just a wedding photographer. And it's important to me that clients know I do photography in my own time as well, and that I'm really passionate about it.' One of the great projects that Robin has worked on over the years is a collaboration with the Royal National Lifeboat Institution; 'I was a lifeboat volunteer for a long time, which got me into a really good position to photograph the lifeboats and the crews. It was great to be right there in the middle of the action and focus on documentary work.' The photographs ended up being a successful RPS qualification submission, as well as being a great example of the work that Robin enjoys on his 'days off'. 'Photography isn't just a job for me. It's something that I love doing - and I happen to get paid for it too!'
Revolutionising your landscape photography
'There's certain unwritten rules of landscape photography that people feel you have to use. Photographing at the golden hour, avoiding midday, rules of thirds - but you have to think outside the box.' At The Convention in January Robin will be giving a Masterclass on landscape photography. 'The world is now saturated with photographs of places in perfect conditions - but you can get a completely different perspective on a landscape when you try different things. You have to define your own style.'
