It becomes a genuine eye-opener to experience beautiful brownskinned students in the daily classroom atmosphere who only yesterday, were performing Fijian war dances, wielding ancient war clubs and parading in scanty native make-up and attire. This university setting, which hosts 71 countries and 35 languages, can truly be considered unique in today's world as it links itself to these island cultures and this one-of-a-kind centre.
Although, a plethora of photos are produced daily by tourists, photographers and working travel agencies, I decided to spend some of my personal time portraying these stunning island people, in all their uniqueness, in the rather sterile, controlled, yet colourful, studio setting. The obvious photography, ie portraiture, would involve blending Samoans, Fijians, Maori, Hawaiian, Tahitians, Tongans and others, into the lush greenery of the islands; but, my goal was different and involved accentuating beautiful faces under the controlled lighting of the photographer's camera room. This was my goal and the results are now yours for the viewing.
Adding only a simple light coating of coconut oil to enhance the skin of these islanders and three or four additional small accent lights into my normal studio set-up, I set out to produce exciting stylised portraits with an abundance of colour, movement and excitement. With the introduction of these small changes, I hoped to provide elevated interest and marketability into my portraiture. Requests for portraits, calendars and reproductions has been often seen as the promising results of this endeavour.
