The 'Sauce'
Background Used: As a background, often manipulated in Photoshop with the Smudge Tool, I have chosen a vibrantly colourful design of the 'Jazz' pattern background (see source: www.portrait-world.com). With enhancement via Photoshop's Smudge Tool and controlled saturation, I felt the flames and fire which this background introduced, was exciting and appropriate for these colourful Polynesians.
(Note: To attempt a DIY background such as the 'Jazz', 10' wide polycotton muslin is dip-dyed using black as a base colour, with normal latex house paint diluted 6:1 with water. Note: if fabric is pre-coated with sizing, use a salt-water removal rinse. While wet, blue toning is then introduced onto the outstretched muslin, to allow a bleed effect.
Streaks of orange-yellow tones are then brushed onto the dried fabric with bold acrylic paint used only slightly diluted with water. The acrylic used here is to get 'action colours' into the dull background which can, later in the image, be worked and moved around with the smudge tool in Photoshop.)
