For the soundtrack you can use the audio captured with filming. But for a professional finish you may wish to add some royalty-free music from a company such as AKM.
Of course, this just skims the surface of the subject. But if you start with something simple such as iMovie or Windows Movie Maker you will pick up the basic techniques quickly and these skills will transfer to more professional packages such as Final Cut Pro or Premiere Pro.
Selling a new product
The whole point of learning this new skill is to allow us to create new products and to differentiate us from the competition. The obvious place to start is weddings. Many couples want stills and video, but cannot afford both. They often don't want a feature film of their wedding, but would love to have a record of the key moments, such as the ceremony and the speeches, where words are important. A perfect solution to this is to capture both at the same time, then to combine them into a 'highlights of the day' DVD, only offering it as part of a premium package. This can be done by a single photographer with a single DSLR camera. As well as differentiation it's a great way to up-sell to your higher rate packages. I have done this and it was the major factor for winning the business from a recent client.
Summary
I hope that this has given you some ideas and inspiration to get started. There is a lot more to learn than with stills photography. By practising and taking some extra training you will soon start to progress, but there is nothing better than seeing it done for real. So for a full presentation with working examples come and see me at the Convention 2011. Or even better, bring your camera to my film-making Superclass and become part of a film crew for the day.
