Being a portrait photographer requires a charismatic personality and an apparently limitless source of energy and enthusiasm, especially when you're working with children. Tamara Peel has all these qualities in considerable quantities and it's easy to see how she manages to inspire her students whenever she teaches.
It all started somewhere back around the early 90s when Tamara enrolled on a photography degree course at university. 'I really kind of stood out on the course, and not in a good way! Everybody else was photographing things that were very symbolic and meaningful whereas I just liked photographing things that made my heart sing!' Shortly after finishing her degree Tamara, went on to start her own business, working from a darkroom in her parents' attic. 'I cold-called all the local toddler groups and I put up a proud exhibition in my local library. Then that was me, I was on my way and I've never looked back!'
'When I first started out I was doing all my own hand printing. There was a massive difference between what I could achieve then and what I can achieve now with digital.' While for Tamara digital has been an opportunity to push the boundaries and create exciting, experimental work, she still believes in delivering a high-quality and physical product as opposed to a set of digital images. 'The great thing about what I do is that I give my clients beautiful, printed products. They want to show them off to everyone that they know so it naturally gets your name out there to more potential clients.'
