Top Ten Tax Evaders
1. Wesley Snipes
For his grandstanding actions in court, the judge's determination to make an example of the actor and Snipes' reasons for not paying tax at all, he goes straight into our top ten in the number one slot.
2. Peter Graf
In charge of his famous daughter Steffi's earnings, former car salesman Peter Graf mishandled her fortune so badly that he landed up in jail for 25 months. Steffi herself was not convicted, but did end up paying 1.3 million deutschemarks to the German tax authorities.
3. Al Capone
Perhaps the most famous of all tax evaders, he was thought to have bragged that "the government can't collect legal taxes on illegal money". Even if that was apocryphal, it turned out to be his downfall. When the government found it could not touch him for his other illicit activities, prostitution, murder, gambling and the like, federal agent Elliott Ness, of Untouchables fame, resorted to arresting him for the more mundane offence of tax evasion. Although sentenced to 11 years, he was freed after six-and-a-half - for good behaviour.
4. Sophia Loren
The beautiful actress spent 18 days in an Italian jail in 1982 for tax evasion.
5. Boris Becker
Although he avoided jail, receiving a probationary sentence instead, the tennis ace was made to pay an estimated 3 million euros in unpaid taxes.
