Dennis tells me with a laugh! 'When you go to a truly international conference you're exposed to all different styles of photography that you would never have encountered otherwise. I came back from that first conference and put the new international styles into my work and my photography got better. People there liked my pictures more because they were somehow different.'

But couldn't we just experience other photographer's work online?

'The real benefit is seeing these photographers speak about their work and understanding the psychology that goes on behind the image' says Dennis, when I ask. 'The only way to truly understand a photographer's work is to hear them talk about it. That's really important, otherwise you're just viewing simple facsimiles of what they're doing'.
