Why photography?
I wanted to do something that I enjoyed doing ! I’d spent most of my career working in the IT industry and had fallen out of love with it. To be able to earn a living doing something that I love doing was a very appealing choice :)
Film or digital? Is there still a place for silver halide?
For me it is digital all the way. I think there is still, and always will be, a niche market for film but when you look at the speed of the world in which we live and the way we “consume” imagery then it has to be digital.
Which camera?
There are always the clichés of the best camera is the one that you have with you but I love my Sony A7R2 for me it is the perfect camera for the job. I also take a lot of personal photos with my iPhone, it is great for a quick snapshot and to act as a reminder of a place I’d like to come back to with a decent camera.
Bit of detail about your own studio set-up/staffing. Why (as a customer) would I choose you?
My studio is the old Quaker meeting hall that is attached to my home and I work with my husband. This gives us a bit of a quirky work space and is certainly a talking point. I think my customers choose me because they want the style of photography that I produce and feel comfortable with me as a person. For me photography is as much about making a connection with the people that you are photographing.
The problem with professional photographers today is...
Our skills are not valued as much as they once were particularly as cameras etc have become more affordable. People take far more photos that ever and are generally happy with their own results, if all you ever see are your friends photos on Instagram you don’t know how much better the results could be, you think that is the “normal” standard.
