Is it primarily about the chance to learn from the experiences of imaging icons?
It is far more than that, it is the opportunity to chat to your peers, make friends and in my case I have some very good friends that I met at my first ever convention that I can catch up with
Your own mentors (living or dead)?
I don’t currently have a mentor and have adopted a different approach on my journey. One of the biggest influences on me was taking part as one of the first Apprentices for Mark Cleghorn’s Photography Academy. I think it is fair to say that I learnt an awful lot during that year ! I have always opted for specific training in specific areas that I’ve been interested in and wanted to improve in. If there is a photographer whose work I really admire I’ll give them a call and try and arrange some training with them.
Who today is leading the way in creative social photography and why?
Rather than a person I think that creative social photography is being driven by Apple, GoPro and DJI because they are encouraging people to get out and BE creative. Their products enable you to take photos and film in places that you may not have taken a dSLR and this is encouraging people to think outside the box.
If you could pick just FIVE seminars (other than your own of course!) to attend at The Societies of Photographers Convention whose workshops would you attend?
Costumes & Props on a small budget - Nedine O’Brien
An Introduction to Food Photography - Robin Goodlad
At the Going Down of the Sun - Marko Dutka
Working with Wildlife - Tesni Ward
Finding your style in Family Photography - Helen Bartlett
What do you think will be the next big thing in the industry?
I think we will see a bit of a split in the industry. There will still be a market for high end portraiture but I think we will see the emergence of new products for our clients and we will need to be able to incorporate cinematic film in with our stills to produce a finished product (as a clue look at what Apple are doing !)
Would you want your own children to take up the reins of your empire (or have they)?
No, my children need to find what they love doing and it may not (and in their case I know it isn’t !) the same as me.
Your plans for the next five years?
To build on what I have achieved to date by developing the filming side of what I do and look at new ways of presenting our work as finished “product” to clients. I want to be able to do more of what I love doing and make sure I make time for personal projects and some adventures along the way :)
