Although the top of the bird's head is sharply defined against the distant background, the interface between the under belly and the tree needs to be softer and so the Feather Tool was brought into use to just lose some of the crispness.

Additionally the bird's foot requires a shadow to ensure reality and make it blend into its surroundings. The portion of the tree below the legs was cloned up onto a new layer (in the overall shape of the shadow) and then a clipped, Levels Adjustment Layer was used to darken things down and create the illusion of a shadow to 'ground' the claws.
