Did it take you long to establish your name and brand?
Everything happened relatively quickly. I could tell from the reaction to photos of our pup Bokeh and his friends, that people loved the images and that there was a market I could tap in to. Pets all have individual, distinctive personalities, and it's important it shines through in the finished photograph. My aim was to develop a style and brand that would make my business stand out from the crowd, and to create fine art images our clients could treasure and hang on their walls.
Do you work alone or employ staff? Mostly I work alone, although sometimes commissions require an extra pair of hands, then I use an assistant. However, I've learned that working alone equates to fewer distractions for the animals.
What motivated you to start in the induYou've employed an unusual marketing device for Furrtography, would you like to tell us about it?
Well, I started with the initial concept of our pup Bokeh talking directly to other pets via social media, websites and our website. He would explain to other pets why they needed the same high standard of photography as their humans. It wasn't long before people started to connect with him, so Bokeh became my business figure-head, much in the way meerkats and a certain bulldog have in mainstream advertising. Bokeh's online personality developed very quickly, and it became quite clear that I was working for him - which in many ways is very true of all pet owners!
What percentage of your time is spent creating images versus time spent on business administration and marketing?
Shooting time is a fraction of what I spend on business admin, website design and social media. It's important to market yourself well, and keep active and viable on social media.
