How do you attract clients and what market do you target?
I find marketing one of the hardest things to do in photography; it's a skill in itself, but much of my work is gained through word of mouth and recommendations from past clients. The business also holds a good ranking with Google, so I get lots of work via the web. Facebook promotions work for the business too, and I do lots of work with charities and dog shows. These all help to raise our profile and brand awareness.
Do you manage your own website, SEO, marketing, social media presence and PR or do you employ the services of others?
I currently manage everything myself. I'd love to spend all my time behind the camera and editing. However, being self-employed and running your own business means that you have to be a master of all trades. It's hard work but an integral part of being successful.
What's your mindset when you get up in the mornings?
A good mug of coffee first, to fire the engine, whilst replying to emails, updating my social media presence with a few sneak peeks and posts of the previous day's sessions, then it's pretty much cracking on with the editing and business admin - all after having walked our CEO of course.
Is there once item of kit, camera aside, that you wouldn't be without and why?
My trusty little light meter, I never go anywhere without it. It's so important to get the metering right in the studio and make sure we have a perfectly exposed image. Getting it right in camera equates to less time editing.
If you could start your business again from day one, what would you do differently (if anything)?
I'm happy with where I am at the moment, but I would change a few things. Firstly I'd get lots of training and business mentoring up front. In some respects I learned the hard way, and in the early days found it hard to put a value on my work. Investing heavily in business mentoring over the last few years has seen me not only grow in confidence, but more able to run my business with professionalism and efficiency.
