We had a couple of days to acclimatise and it was great to be joined by Richie Walton who had come on a later flight. Gradually we got used to the scale of the place. Even navigating from our room to the Convention Centre meant descending 18 floors then navigating through a mile or so of slot machines, shops, restaurants, cinema's, poker tables, all without leaving the MGM building. All that exercise could have led to weight loss but fortunately there were plenty of opportunities to refuel with hot dogs, ribs, breakfast buffets, noodles, Mexican snacks. Safe to say I didn't go hungry. We took a trip out into the desert to the Red Rock Canyon, incredible landscape but I don't get a buzz from capturing landscapes. It was the one day I really could have done with having a nude model to hand! As we travelled around it was again the quality of the light that really impressed me. I couldn't wait to get camera in hand and shoot some pictures.
That had to wait though as we had some briefings to attend ahead of the judging sessions. There was an impressive array of international talent in the briefing and made me feel like new boy at school. What really impressed though was the warmth of the welcome I received from industry figureheads to people I didn't recognise. It felt like we were a team and ready to go into battle for the betterment of the industry as a whole and I loved it. Speaking of being determined to get the best out of the trip, a word of praise for Juliet. As head of the Societies she had a go-anywhere speak-to-anyone pass for the event. In order to get a thorough working knowledge of how WPPI handle their judging process, she spent two days working as a print handler. Dedication indeed. Two long days went by in a flash, I learned loads and saw some fantastic work by photographers from across the globe.
There are 0 days to get ready for The Society of Photographers Convention and Trade Show at The Novotel London West, Hammersmith ...
which starts on Thursday 1st January 1970
