How do you attract clients and what market do you target?
My past career experience is as a golf coach and a researcher. I have two university degrees, one in psychology and another in coaching, and a Ph D in sport sciences, focusing on Expert Performance. As a researcher, I wasn't accustomed to using fluffy words in my marketing – I wanted to be accurate. So when I started working professionally as a photographer, I would describe my workflow in detail, from sensor to print, to my clients. Almost all my wedding clients were exclusively holders of Ph Ds and engineers, which I thought was very strange – I later discovered it was due to my nerdy marketing! I then introduced a little more light-heartedness into my marketing, whilst still being true to myself.
Referrals, bridal fairs, and digital-marketing on Google are the main ways I attract clients – these days my clients are a little more varied in their backgrounds!
Do you manage your own website, SEO, marketing, social media presence and PR or do you outsource?
I outsource my SEO. I also get help with my website when needed, as my Wordpress site has been under attack many times – I needed assistance to make it more secure (changing the database table titles so viruses can’t change them easily, and using plug-ins for stopping general threats and spam). Also, it’s been a constant battle with loading speed versus image quality, so at times I get support from experts in that field too.
