Looking at a photographer's portfolio can be revealing – what does your portfolio reveal about you?
I have a mixed style which sits between natural light photojournalism and lit fashion. I’m drawn not only towards happy images, but also the fragility of life and its associated emotional highs and lows.
I sincerely hope my clients are moved when I present their pictures. During my amateur years, I didn’t spend much time training, but learnt to anticipate events fairly well, which is good for journalistic events. However, posing and lighting is something I've spent much time practising and improving during recent years. I seem, however, to do better in competitions in the wedding photojournalistic category, so I probably need to work harder in the portrait and fashion area.
You enter competitions – is it with your day-today work or do you shoot specifically to create a competition image?
Yes, I enter competitions. I don’t shoot specifically for them, as it’s difficult to have two masters (ie clients versus judges, my clients come first). I see competitions as a motivator, to improve both my photography and post production. I’m not so frustrated by low scores, as I am with unclear or poor feedback. If I get good feedback during competitions, I can take action to improve, then I’m happy. Also, it is a kick to try to improve my personal best.
