Set up in 2003, Hireacamera.com is another outlet doing lighting hire, such as the twohead Lumen 8, 400w kits, plus portable Lastolite Ezybox flash kits. "We hire those like they're going out of fashion; quite often our customers want something that's so transportable," according to the company's Guy Thatcher, "plus because we deliver nationwide, weight has quite an impact on courier charges, so people prefer something that only weighs 7kg."

But in the main, as the company name suggests, it is cameras that get rented. Of these Guy spotlights the new Sigma SD1 with its 46 megapixel sensor as being ideal for fine art photography and popular with his customer base because of it. "The quality of the shots you get is stunning for fabrics and strands of hair; for me it's more akin to a medium-format camera but we're charging the same as the Canon EOS 5D Mark II to hire it out. We hire out a 70-200mm lens with the Sigma, which has just won an EISA award, plus a 17-50mm f/2.8. Everyone who has hired it out has said it's a cracking bit of kit."

Calumet is another well-known name offering hire kit, and for fine art photographers they suggest Profoto D1 500 heads at £20 per day plus 15% damage waiver and 20% VAT, with purchase prices starting at £852.00 inc VAT. There's also the Calumet Studio LED panel at £40 per day plus 15% damage waiver and 20% VAT, with a purchase price of £399.00 inc VAT.

Whether the hiring or buying route makes the most sense to you, it's reassuring to know the options are out there and equipment that might once have seemed out of reach as an outright investment, can fall within reach when opting for a day or week's hire instead.
