And being a professional is something that comes as second nature to Sam. When you have been a photographer all your life and you've built a solid foundation in good technique those little problems that crop up on a wedding day no longer worry you. 'It doesn't really faze me if they're running late or if something else has happened, I just do the best I can in the time we have', Sam tells me. 'I might set up lights a little differently or perhaps use more available light so we can move faster, but I still make sure I get all the right moments.

'The tools we have available today, especially some of the cameras that can handle low light situations very well, mean that there's no reason not to get great shots. But I'm not someone who will shoot with no lights just because I can, because we're still going to be printing images after the wedding and we need to make sure that we can print what we shoot and that it looks great.' Sam also tries to pre-plan some of his shots to make the day go more smoothly, looking for interesting backgrounds and considering the lighting before starting to shoot. He adds that even when weddings don't run smoothly you still have to keep a positive mindset and act accordingly. 'You're not just a photographer. Your job is to relax the guests and keep them at ease the whole day; you play a very important role.'
