Digital Portraits as Art
'I'm going to be talking about the process of creating my Women as Art portraiture, and the feelings behind the images,' Vicki-Lea tells me when I ask what she'll be covering in her Masterclass at The Convention this year. 'I want to help people to get emotions out of the people they photograph in order to reflect it back in the images that they make.'
Technical skills will also be part of the Masterclass, with Vicki-Lea explaining some of the arsenal of techniques at her disposal: 'I use a lot of brushwork, and I'm really into making brushes, so I'm going to show people that process. By making your own brushes for digital art you're really setting yourself apart from everyone else by creating the components that you're using within Photoshop.'
But it won't be all about the technique, Vicki-Lea will also be discussing how she has built her business too: 'I'm also going to be covering how to sell digital art and make a successful income from providing a very alternative service. I think that many people are very nervous about going out there and offering something completely different because they are worried that it will fall flat on it's face.
'I really hope that it will give people the confidence to try something new. Even if you don't offer it as a service in your business, digital art can be an enjoyable pastime just for yourself.' Of course Vicki-Lea also hopes that it might change a few perceptions about what digital portraiture really is - 'This is photographic art. It's a whole new genre and it's not going away any time soon. I'm hoping to change a few people's minds about what I do; I'm hoping that they'll look at it and see it as a genre that is worth taking notice of. We'll see - I've got my work cut out!'
