What's your mindset when you get up in the mornings?

I'm definitely a morning person and once I've had my coffee (and my meds) I am eager to get started, especially if the sun is shining! Due to my disability I take medication to stay awake, but my sleep patterns are erratic too, so to clear my head, every weekday begins with a walk through the fields with Harvey. It's my therapy session, grounding me for the day ahead. I'm a very positive person which helps deal with some of the challenges we face when running our own business, and with the complexities of life in general.

Do you work alone or employ staff?

Most people would say I work alone, but I do have one member of staff who remains office-based - my shadow, Harvey! He sleeps all day and snores pretty loudly too, but he is good company. I also have an in-house model, Christine Statham, who commissioned me to photograph her dogs a few years ago. She's a full-time graphic designer, but has modelled on a number of projects for me.

Did it take you long to establish your name and brand?

I wanted something personal, but also unique for my business name. Combining the names of our two children, Theo and Demi provided that - Detheo was born.

Brand identity has evolved with the growth of the business, over time. However, 2012 saw me donate a kidney to my husband Mike. The operation was a success for him, but I developed complications and it took me almost a year to recover, and another year to feel well again.

Happily in January 2016, I finally felt the company had found its true identity, so set about launching the new brand logo.

How do you attract clients and what market do you target?

Whilst I cover a variety of genres, I love to specialise in pet photography, weddings and commercial commissions.

I strongly believe meeting people face-to-face is an incredibly powerful tool. With this in mind I've attended numerous country shows over the years, and photographed hundreds of dogs. It's the same for weddings too; I've been capturing couple's weddings for over three years.

These days most new clients come via recommendation. I also do my best to stay active on social media, as I know it benefits the business.
