What's the best single piece of business advice you'd like to share?
It's difficult to pinpoint one single thing, but for me there are things that are essential: to deliver a professional service from start to finish, to have a contract for everything, and to be honest.
Learning to become a competent photographer is a serious challenge, one that keeps us learning and exploring - what would you say is the most important challenge you've faced as a photographer?
My biggest challenge has definitely been my confidence. It took years to grow braver and learn to believe in myself and my work. Every now and then, that self doubt starts to creep in, but I've now learnt to tackle it head on.
Looking at a photographer's portfolio can be revealing - what does your portfolio reveal about you?
I'd love to discover what others see when they look at my portfolio; I'm sure each will find something different. What I hope they see is someone who's passionate about the images they create. I'm very much an animal lover and that, I think is obvious, but I am also always ready for the next challenge, which has resulted in some very interesting commissions over the years.
Do you enter competitions, if so, is it with your day-to-day work or do you shoot specifically to create competition images?
Without a shadow of a doubt, competitions have had a huge influence on both my learning and my confidence; I can't stress their importance enough. It's not about the actual award as such, but simply by entering I've learnt to scrutinise my images and be my own worst critic. My favourite competition is the annual Socieities' 16x20 Print Competition, judged at The Convention in January. Each year I attend the judging, listen to the comments and absorb ideas and information. It's fascinating to see how each judge can view an image differently.
To be honest, 98% of my competition images are created during a client commission. I do have some ideas for the future for creating purely for competition, but for now they're stored away, whilst I concentrate on the everyday running of the business.
