The Flash Centre and Elinchrom

The Flash Centre tells us it has completely changed its range and flags up the optimum specification of the new D-Lite RX One from Swiss brand Elinchrom, described as a 'proper lighting kit with great spec' for a rather affordable £375. This is available as a 'to go' soft-box or umbrella set. The soft-box set is said to be ideal for use in small spaces where light control is essential to avoid unwanted reflections, whereas the umbrella set is ideal for use in large halls and open spaces where speed of assembly is advantageous. The D-Lite RX One claims to provide around twice the light output of the strongest Speedlight - so is good for not just amateurs but also pros wanting good performance at low power levels - and is one of the smallest yet most robust Elinchrom mains flash units. It's also compatible with a wide range of Elinchrom accessories for the more precise shaping of light if desired.

Alternatively there's the option of Elinchrom's D-Lite RX 2/4, RX 2 and RX 4 kits (200W or 400W) - again described as 'to go' solutions, and the entry models in Elinchrom's studio flash family. The D-Lite RX kits enable instant use for studio photography, and, with only two bags, the complete studio is very portable and can be easily stored between jobs. The 2/2 and the 4/4 kits come with two 66 x 66cm soft-boxes and can be used with an optional deflector set - should you want to modify the nature of the light. The manufacturer claims you should be able to get 2,000+ portraits per day out of these set-ups.

Next up are the Elinchrom BRX 250 and 500 compact flash units (as they sound 250W and 500W); so compact in fact that the BRX basic sets fit into the one bag for easy transportation. Optional stand sets, including 88-235cm stands or air cushioned 102-264cm stands, are available depending on your needs. All sets come with two Portalites, which, when combined with the optional deflector set, take advantage of the unique Elinchrom central shaft. With many programmable features on offer, the lights are compatible with the EL-Skyport remote system.

If you're looking for something more heavy duty for use outdoors as well as in, there is also the new Ranger Quadra Hybrid AS RX portable 400-Watt battery flash system - again from Elinchrom. The advantages here include fast recycling times, plus wireless trigger and remote options via the EL-Skyport. It also remains portable, at 2kg with lithium battery. Its manufacturer claims that this 'to go' unit's up-to-the-minute software manages flash power consistency, remote power variation, while it includes an LED modelling lamp and even more RX features than are currently available on any other unit.
