Bessel Studio Lighting Ltd

When we spoke to UK photographic lighting equipment specialist Bessel, it was readying a couple of new products in anticipation of them making a first appearance at our Societies' Convention in January.

First off, Bessel is adding a lithium ion battery pack option to its KQ series studio lamps, so they can now be used outdoors from the battery or indoors, like any other lamp. Starting price on the KQ400 400 Watt lamp is £189.99 including VAT, with the battery pack option being £199.99 inc VAT. The Bessel KQ400 400 Watt studio flash head itself is compatible with Bowens accessories and includes one lamp reflector, one 150W modelling bulb, one sync lead, plus one five metre UK power lead. A digital control panel on the rear of the lamp is said to make control easy and accurate, while it also boasts a swift one-second recycling time. Integral to the lamp is an internal cooling fan, a cut-off circuit to prevent overheating, a strong rubberised aluminium body, steel stand connector fitting (stand not included), plus user replaceable flash tubes.

Secondly Bessel has a new battery-only powered lamp to showcase. All the main components for the lamp are housed with the lithium ion battery so the lamp head itself is claimed to weigh very little. This latest lamp and battery kit will retail for £379.99 inc VAT. For more details please come to the Convention!

Viewfinder Photography

Leicester-based photographic specialist Viewfinder Photographer flags up the StroBeam DL D250 Mk III as of interest to SWPP members working on location. This compact battery operated flash unit offers battery compatibility and is described as 'lightweight and full of features', including a 3G remote and trigger system, plus rechargeable lithium ion battery the size of a paperback book. A large LCD panel displays the operational status in real time, while each head is independently adjustable from minimum to maximum power. It is also claimed to be readily available and affordable at £499 + VAT.

This flash unit also has a bigger brother in the compact StroBeam EID 500 G-5 that Viewfinder says is now higher powered and offers battery and mains operation, as well as again being packed with attendant features.

Again it can be run off a battery the size of a paperback book for daylong outdoor shoots and plugged into the mains on your return to take advantage of the modelling light and what are claimed to be even better recycling times. Otherwise one full charge provides up to 565 full power flashes when using one 500-watt head. Pricing via Viewfinder is currently £625 + VAT.

Viewfinder adds that another popular item amongst wedding photographers are the trigger kits allowing use with both speedlites and monoblocks, highlighting the StroBeam FSK2.4G as one of them at a price of £44.90 + VAT. This advance trigger system offers the flexibility of hotshoe mounts on both trigger and receiver, allowing users to add a speedlite at either location. The trigger system also allows studio flash sync, providing the opportunity to mix your speedlites and studio flash together.

Lastly the company also flags up its non-reflective vinyl backdrops as being consistently popular - not so much for the wedding photographer but more for studio use. Prices vary according to size. Head to the URL below to find out more, or of course drop by their stand at the Convention.
