Starting with a blank canvas, Brett worked hard to develop a style for himself that was strong and original, and he came up with a look that he describes as 'editorially based with a believability to the images.'
"I believe style is a continually evolving phenomenon and is a reflection of the creator's personality," he says. "I draw inspiration from many different places: film, fashion magazines and visual media in general. I think that creating a distinctive style is more about shooting images that you like, rather than following trends. This does mean that you have to know what you like, which can be difficult for some people as society encourages you to constantly try to please others, with things like social media becoming a major influence. People tend to judge an image by how many 'likes' it receives, not on whether it's fulfilled your creative needs or the client's expectations."
Brett's devotion to photography has seen him become a successful wedding, commercial and fashion photographer, with longstanding clients such as Wonderbra, Playtex, Quiksilver and Roxy. Along the way he's achieved numerous accolades, including the distinction of being chosen as the representative Nikon Wedding Photographer worldwide for Photokina in Germany. Brett has also worked with some of South Africa's most famous personalities, including Bishop Desmond Tutu, FW de Klerk, Trevor Manuel and Jonty Rhodes, when he photographed them for a coffee-table book Perfect Weekend.
