"On the Friday I'm running a Masterclass called 'Passion to Profit' that is aimed at people who are thinking about a change of career or who might view photography as a supplementary income option. Particularly in creative fields, artistic people struggle with the business aspects of their endeavours. I will talk about the pitfalls and potential hurdles that they might encounter along the way. Being self-taught, I have made all the mistakes that photographers make entering uncharted waters, and I'll talk about these and share marketing techniques and long-term business strategies that result in a sustainable business.
"Finally my Superclass on the Saturday looks at how wedding photography can be inspired by fashion and commercial photography. I believe that wedding photography can be very cliched at times, with a stream of expected poses and cheesy scenarios. My wedding photography targets a fashion-conscious market that appreciates editorially styled images. These are the types of clients who read magazines such as Vogue, Vanity Fair, Harper's Bazaar and the like. They are surrounded by fashion-inspired images, and wear designer brands. My lecture looks at shooting techniques and marketing strategies that will enable you to attract high-end clients who like your style, thus liberating you to create images that inspire you."
As well as putting in a considerable shift as a teacher, Brett is also eagerly looking forward to catching some workshops himself. "I attended a lot of classes last year and listened to a few of the big names in the industry," he says. "I also stumbled into a few classes being run by people I hadn't heard of, and found a lot of value in these presentations. I'm going to approach this year's Convention with an open mind and attend classes presented by people I haven't been exposed to yet: it will be a bit like a lottery mentality, and I hope it pays off!"
