Another couple of details needed to be taken care of: firstly, removing them from their daily routine could prove tiring, so I allocated a maximum of 15 minutes with each - this seemed to be the perfect time. Finally, pretty much every portrait was taken with the subject sitting in a wheelchair.
decided to make things as simple as possible, as in the title of this article:
“One light, one lens, 100”.
My choice of lens was the 50mm and illumination was the available light, supplemented with reflectors. I also used a very shallow depth of field, in many cases pretty much wide open; this to ensure fast enough hand-held exposures.
Some of the centenarians were remarkable; one lady completing the Daily Telegraph crossword each day, at 105 years old.
All had stories to tell which made interesting conversation.
I asked another lady, who was also 100, a question, “to what do you put down to your longevity?"
She paused and replied, “When I was younger, I used to smoke full-strength cigarettes, as I became more refined, I took to red wine, then, moving into the home last year I gave up sex." She smiled wryly. Great sense of humour.
