Hire a Camera

Set up in 2003 and run by switched-on MD Guy Thatcher, as the name suggests this Sussex-based outfit offers rental deals on the very latest camera kit - letting you hire it for a shoot, or to try out for a weekend if you are a potential buyer. It also offers lens and lighting hire. Its customer base comprises a plethora of wedding and event photographers. The difference between Hireacamera and a retailer is obviously that the financial commitment of trying new models is considerably less when you’re hiring - and the company says that, as a result, it has seen its photographers adopting equipment earlier than they might have done in a retail environment.

Unsurprisingly, hire of premium-end compact system camera ranges such as those from Fujifilm, Olympus and Sony has proved as popular as - or more popular than - traditional DSLRs, as photographers consider going ‘mirrorless’. Hireacamera.com also has a loyalty scheme for customers with red, silver and gold privileges/bonuses corresponding to the regularity of the person doing the hire. Plus, as of a Thursday, anything still in stock is offered at a single day’s hire price for the weekend. www.hireacamera.com
