Marrutt

Marrutt's USP is that it has built its long-standing reputation via specialising only in pro-grade photographic papers and inks. MD John Read describes its own-brand, US-manufactured Marrutt Professional Photographic Inks for inkjet printers, as for "high volume users who want the best possible economy, but pro photographic performance."

"You can buy too cheap an ink," he continues. "But is it individually tested for the printers or not? For example, you want all eight channels of the printer to be equally responsive. We were very careful to make sure we had a competitive price; but it had to be professional ink. We're far cheaper than competitors for a 125ml bottle."

Another point of difference is that Marrutt has its own UK bottling plant.

This not only means that it can handle high volume, but that it can also supply bottles to customers in all sizes - even down to 30ml.

Photographers can buy individual replacement bottles of ink too - so no need to invest in a whole set at once. "Lots of customers with an Epson R3000 have changed over to using us one bottle at a time," John Read marvels. "We made a heavy investment in colour management early on. With 22,500 customers worldwide we process tons of ink per month and a good deal more than that in terms of paper."

Marrutt's MD says that his customers can print with confidence via his products as it makes sure they are "bang on" for colour and density by offering up a test print sample via www.marrutt.com/print.php

"Print it out, send it back to us and we'll be able to tell whether or not it's within tolerance," he reasons. "We'll then help photographers re-profile if necessary and won't let them go until they've got it right."

In a nutshell, Marrutt's proposition is the best possible price and control over processing - with a YouTube channel also talking you through its wares.

Aside from its own-brand products, Marrutt is worldwide distributor for Lyson inks, widely recognised as the top third party ink, for territories outside the US. Lyson inks are likewise bottled in house and Marrutt offers a complementary range of photographic paper, exclusively imported from Germany.

"The unique thing as regards the paper is that we always have every product in stock and we are the only company to supply our thousands of customers in whatever paper size they would like. For example, via usyou can get every single paper size your printer driver lists and use it at full bleed. We use very expensive German guillotines and make no extra charge for cutting to order."

Summing up, John notes: "We are a very old-fashioned company in that we simply do what our customers ask us to do. That includes a range of paper that is limited in terms of choice but the absolute best in terms of quality, plus we always ship for next day delivery."
