My Photo School

This aptly named outfit, offering online training from renowned photographers, has been trading a little over a year. It differs from others out there, however, in that not only do those signing up get professional critiques of their assignments, they also get their own photography website free of charge.

The team behind my-photo-school.com is equally heavyweight in comprising ex eBay and Skype Director Elspeth Briscoe, plus Associate of the Royal Photographic Society and member of the British Institute of Professional Photographer, Duncan Heather - also a past winner of the SWPP & BPPA Monochrome Photographer of the Year.

"When we were creating MyPhotoSchool we looked at the competition and asked ourselves: what don't they offer and what more could we give our students? We came up with quite a comprehensive list," enthuses Duncan. "We wanted to enable our students to get one-toone feedback with the best photographers in the world, and to be able to build camaraderie with fellow students in our online classrooms.

We also wanted to be able to provide our students with their own free photography website, together with the tools and templates to create a professional design, on which to display work - and ultimately sell it, if they chose to upgrade."

Tutors are professional photographers including Heather Angel, David Newton, Nigel Hicks, Keith Wilson and Tony Worobiec. Subjects covered in the 'global classroom' include everything from back yard to big game photography; from black and white photography to discovering colour; and from low light to understanding light, as well as how to take beautiful baby, wedding, pet and even fantastic flower photos.

Lasting four weeks and beginning on the first Saturday of each month, all MyPhotoSchool courses cost £145. As the course is online there is the advantage of being able to learn at your own pace. There are also stepby-step video tutorials, downloadable course notes, and the facility to chat with tutors and fellow classmates online in a 'virtual classroom'. "The classroom may be 'virtual' but the camaraderie is real, and the technology is very intuitive and easy to use," concludes Elspeth.
