How do you attract new clients and which market do you target?
I target the pet market principally – my website and marketing attracts people emotionally connected to their pets. Now I'm becoming established, business is snowballing, largely from word-of-mouth, personal recommendation, repeat business and networking. I'm proactive in the local area and have my work displayed in Hungerford Veterinary Hospital. I also attend shows and ‘am very active on social media.
It’s not all about doing paid work, as giving back to my local community is important to me too. I volunteer at Newbury Riding for the Disabled and produce their Christmas cards using my pictures of the ponies they use to help disabled people.
Do you manage your own website, SEO, marketing, social media presence and PR or do you pay someone else?
I've recently launched a re-branded website and manage it myself. I like to be in control of my own marketing and have enrolled on a social media marketing course. Taking photographs as well as all the preparatory work which goes on behind the scenes, including running a small business, is very timeintensive. I want to ensure I spend as much time as I can on photography, otherwise my mindset can feel like a messy fog, suffocating me and stifling my creativity. Taking on too much can feel like a chimp on my shoulder, distracting me, so I outsource some tasks to others – a good friend of mine owns a copywriting business and is always there to help with my marketing content. And I recently had a lovely article published in Newbury’s Round & About magazine, which goes out to hundreds and thousands of homes.
